how does itunes dj integration work?
« on: June 09, 2009, 03:34:08 AM »

Im really confused about itunes dj integration, how does it work? When i go to itunesdj tab on pulptunes the playlist is empty and there seems to be absolutely no way to populate it. Do I have to start it manually in itunes first?

Overall - i really like pulptunes, it's very promising and in time could grow to be a great audio server :) For the moment, the mostly appreciated feature would be some kind of playlist randomization or shuffle. You might also consider putting together some basic documentation/faq detailing the less obvious stuff.

Thanks for your comments. I do agree with all your points: shuffle and repeat will come soon, and I do need to set up a FAQ.

About iTunes DJ: no need to have iTunes open. It doesn't sync with your iTunes' iTunes DJ, it's just a place to queue the songs you wanna hear later. It does start empty, and every visitor has its own separate iTunesDJ.
You can queue songs there to be played later, by right-clicking on a song on any playlist, and selecting "Add to iTunesDJ". If you select "Play next in iTunesDJ", it will be added to the list, and will start playing.

Well that explains a lot :) You could name it something else tho - like pulptunes queue - i bet more people are going to treat is as actual itunes dj integration and expect it to come up with songs on its own.

Granted. I'll see if I can make it start with some randomized songs for the next minor release.

When are you expecting the new version of Pulp tunes to be released? I would love to have the randomize songs feature?

I would love to have an alternative to the itunes remote client on iphone/ipod touch which supports remote control of the itunes DJ function.  I saw "itunes DJ support" in the pulptunes feature list, but downloaded it and it's clear that there's not actually any integration with the actual itunes DJ function, and there's no way to control the playback of itunes on the remote machine, which is what I'm trying to do.  Is this something that's in the pulptunes roadmap?  Or is there another solution?  I'd be happy with a web-based iphone emulator that I could just load the itunes remote on...

thanks

The iTunes DJ feature in pulpTunes lets you build a playlist on the run, sorta like in a party asking a song to the DJ for him to queue up and play later. All this in your browser, not in the iTunes instance itself where the pulpTunes server is running. pulpTunes is not a remote control for iTunes.

I agree with alpeb; only a slight addition ; you should also know the list of "allowed file extensions that can be played" in & by pulptunes. [else compatibility issue can give you real hard time]
Anyways! hats off! pulpTunes is helping me a lot in my DJ shift!
