mandatory connection to pulptunes.com?
« on: December 02, 2009, 02:07:57 PM »

I was unable to use my pulptunes server this morning and found I had a problem connecting to pulptunes.com.  Not sure if this was a web hosting problem or an ISP DNS problem but the domain was unreachable for me.  I know the server queries the website to verify the connection and display your IP but can pulptunes function with out a connection to pulptunes.com?  Is this something that can be worked around?  I was afraid the project went under when I wasn't able to get to the site earlier today.  :o

Yeah sorry about that, the geniuses at my registrar had killed my dns records so we got a few hours of downtime. pulpTunes not only uses the pulptunes.com site to let you know your IP, but also to get the css and javascript files, which is much faster than serving them from the pulpTunes server itself in the majority of cases. Anyway, what happened today shows we need to address this in a future version. The app should still get those files by default from pulptunes.com, but there should be an error-recovery procedure to serve them from the app itself if needed.

Added to the to-do list.

Thanks for keeping in touch ;)

Cheers,
Alejandro

Ah.  I now understand why I had trouble getting the server to function at work from a workstation with no direct connection to the internet.  I could get to the pulp server (was on local LAN) but without the css and javascript all I saw was ugly nonfunctional html. ;D  The locally served option would help in that situation as well.  Also want to thank you for all your hard work and the quick replies to questions.  I look forward to the next release.

Rather than just a fallback, would it be possible to choose between locally-server and web-served?  Almost all of my use is over my university's network, which I'd imagine is faster than pulptunes.com.

Sure, I haven't yet given this a deep thought, but note has been taken ;)
