Initial thoughts...
« on: September 06, 2009, 09:50:01 AM »

Okay - so I have been using Pulptunes for a little while now and have several suggestions and opinions that I'd like to air...  as with most people, some of these are personal desires but also some are suggestions that would benefit the entire community.  I apologize if these have been mentioned elsewhere.

1.  Pulptunes as a service - this would enable things like recovery and the other benefits of running as a service

2.  Ability to re-read the iTunes XML on a timed basis or scan for changes periodically and reload it if a change - I run this on a computer with music on the local drive, an external USB drive and a remote-mounted drive.  Most of the new music goes on to the remote-mounted NAS drive and then is replicated to the local drive in the evening.  In order to recognize any changes, I have to run Itunes and update the locations, and then Pulptunes has to be manually stopped and re-started to recognize those changes made in iTunes.  In my own opinion, I wish there was simply a separate utility that could scan file systems and create the XML file needed (or incorporate directly into the application) so that iTunes was not even needed.  I am not fond of programs that rely on other programs but I do like the ease/simplicity of Pulptunes.

3.  Playlists are a bit wonky - added files play immediately and appending music once playing isn't recognized - it needs to be added prior to playing?

4.  Random Playing (I know this has been stated elsewhere)

... I had more ideas to write here but got side-tracked and my thoughts just fizzled... I'll write them down and append them to this list...

Hi Dirk,

Thanks for the feedback, very much appreciated.

Are you talking about windows services? To be honest I'm not very familiar with that. I've been thinking on being able to daemonize pulpTunes on Linux, instead of using the current hack in pt_linux.sh that depends on the availability of the nohup command. But really not a priority right now.

Regarding the ability to automatically detect changes in an library without having to restart both iTunes and pulpTunes; that would indeed come in very handy. This would go hand in hand with support for libraries other than iTunes. Big leap for this project, so it's gonna have to get into the roadmap soon.

Could you rephrase point 3? I'm not sure I understood. Is this about iTunes DJ?

Random Playing and Repeat buttons will come with the new release in a few weeks.

Cheers,
Alejandro
